When you have found the perfect placement for your machine, leave it there and review the section on cutting foam in the next chapter. It’s a good idea to read through the whole book before cutting your foam. You may find an idea that you want to try that you have not considered before!
Really Different Ideas!

Some quilters like to position their sewing machine in a “mock longarm” position* for machine quilting (not for regular sewing or piecing). They find that the machine quilting process is easier if they don’t have to fight the throat of the sewing machine on one side. This will limit how much of the quilt you can move away from you, but these machine quilters find it much easier to use a “sideways” movement of the whole quilt as it is being quilted versus the traditional “front to back” motion of sewing.
They enjoy the greater range of motion attained using both hands and arms to move the quilt continually sideways, similar to the way a longarm machine moves from side to side. This setting also allows you to use overall repetitive designs similar to those used by longarm quilters.
As you will see in the next chapter, it’s very easy to replace and re-cut the foam if you don’t like the placement of your machine. Don’t be afraid to try this placement of your machine if it intrigues you, especially if you have more than one sewing machine or one machine that you only use for doing the finish quilting with.
*A “longarm” is an industrial quilting machine that holds the quilt secure on a frame and allows the sewing head to move freely in tracks along the frame, in a “side to side” movement.
